Seasonal Guide to Cabin Camping at Royal Gorge

Colorado’s Royal Gorge Region is the best of the American West on a platter. Anchored by the Royal Gorge itself—among the most striking canyons on the continent—and its Arkansas River, famous for world-class whitewater, this dazzling place is your playground when you take advantage of our Colorado cabin camping and glamping here at Royal Gorge Cabins.

Our decked-out cabins and luxury glamping tents outside Cañon City, which combine glorious views and pampered comforts, are truly a year-round getaway: There’s something to be said for every season out here in Colorado’s Banana Belt!

Seasonal Attractions in the Royal Gorge Region

Summer is the peak tourism season in the Royal Gorge Region, no question. After all, it’s the height of river rafting on the Arkansas—readily enjoyed, by the way, with our partner outfit, Echo Canyon River Expeditions, which has been leading whitewater runs through the Royal Gorge, Bighorn Sheep Canyon, and other regional routes for more than 40 years.

The Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival celebrates the major pedigree of our local wildwater while raising money for local non-profits with two days of downriver and foot/bike racing, food trucks, live music, and plenty of other fun.

And then there’s all of the hiking, mountain biking, ziplining, rock-climbing, ATV/4WD touring, and other outdoor activities available across the summertime landscape, from the Southern Rocky Mountains out to the wide open spaces of the Colorado Piedmont and High Plains.

Fall, though, is also a fine time to enjoy those outdoor pursuits, and offers the added bonus of spectacular leaf-peeping given all the glorious autumn colors sported by quaking aspens, cottonwoods, and other deciduous trees and shrubs.

Bridge of Lights – Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

The holidays come well celebrated in these parts, not least in and around the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, where in spring you might attend the popular Easter Sunrise service and over Halloween weekend the Boo at the Bridge festivities (which mark their 10th year in 2024). The Christmas stretch, meanwhile, delights with the Bridge of Lights installation at the Royal Gorge Bridge and the Santa Express Train ride offered by the Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

And we’re not even diving into all of the year-round destinations you can enjoy whenever you come to stay with us here at Royal Gorge Cabins, from museums and historic sites to restaurants, breweries, and wineries—from close by in Cañon City to other regional hubs such as Colorado Springs.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit the Royal Gorge?

As you can hopefully gather from just our skimming of the surface above, there’s plenty to do any time of year you’re traveling in the Royal Gorge Region. When push comes to shove, though, it’s hard to argue that summer isn’t the showstopper season, given it’s the main window for the incredible whitewater rafting the Arkansas River serves up and a whole host of other forms of outdoor recreation. If you’ve never sampled the many pleasures of the Royal Gorge Region and Fremont County, we recommend a summertime getaway for your first visit.

That said, we’re also mighty partial to the charms of autumn, with the glorious fall colors, the crisp sunshine, and the uncrowded vibes downright intoxicating.

But, of course, then there’s the comparatively mild (it’s the Colorado Banana Belt, after all!) and gloriously scenic wintertime—you’ll love the view of the snow-swaddled Sangre de Cristo Mountains from your cabin or glamping tent here—and the vernal sweetness of spring, with the profusion of wildflowers, the flocks of migrating birds, and those magical lengthening days. Long story short: You can’t go wrong out here, especially not when you’re calling Royal Gorge Cabins your home away from home!
